Mi nombre es Andrew Mitchell.

Vivo en Waikanae, un pequeño pueblo costero al norte de Wellington, la capital de Nueva Zelanda.

Tengo una pequeña tienda de bicicletas en la costa de Kapiti desde que tenía 30. Soy un ávido ciclista de montaña y paso tiempo con mi hijo trabajando en el proyecto de un automóvil.

Empecé a construir dioramas como pasatiempo durante el primer confinamiento de 2020 por la pandemia, que duró 7 semanas. Había incursionado un poco en la construcción de modelos cuando era adolescente, construyendo automóviles y aviones y tenía un tren a escala cuando era niño. Siempre me ha gustado el arte, la pintura y el dibujo, y este pasatiempo realmente se ha apoderado de mi para pasar mi tiempo creativo. Vi el confinamiento como un buen momento para tomarme un hobby que disfrutaba un poco más en serio y probar dioramas que siempre me han interesado.

Hasta ahora, he hecho un poco más de 20 dioramas desde 2020. Construyo lo que me viene a la mente y generalmente estoy trabajando en 2 o 3 proyectos a la vez. Todos los autos que uso en mis dioramas son colecciones de mi familia y amigos a lo largo de los años. Lo que más me gusta hacer es experimentar con técnicas de envejecimiento y construir árboles; las encuentro muy desafiantes y siempre estoy buscando un enfoque más realista con cada construcción. La construcción de dioramas que retratan elementos viejos, desgastados y oxidados son las cosas más satisfactorias para mí y existen infinitas técnicas para lograrlo. Mis obras más importantes son la ruina y el puente viejo, la inspiración para estos proviene de los pocos años que pasé en Inglaterra cuando era niño en los años 80, donde estas escenas son comunes y me encantan del Reino Unido. Como disfruto de la ciencia ficción, el platillo volador estrellado y el naufragio de la nave espacial fueron fácilmente las construcciones más divertidas hasta el momento. ¡Habrá más construcciones de ciencia ficción por venir! Encuentro este pasatiempo muy terapéutico y el tiempo vuela cuando realmente te estás metiendo en una construcción. Hay tantos medios que puedes usar para construir dioramas, lo que lo convierte en un pasatiempo emocionante en el que estás aprendiendo y mejorando constantemente.

My name is Andrew Mitchell.

I live in Waikanae, a small coastal town just north of Wellington, the capital of New Zealand.

I have owned a small bicycle shop on the Kapiti coast for the last 15 years since I was 30. I'm an avid mountain biker and spend time with my son working on a project car.I started building dioramas as a hobby during the first lockdown in 2020 which lasted 7 weeks. I had dabbled with a bit of model building as a teenager building cars and aircraft and had a model railway as a kid. I have always enjoyed art and paint and draw but this hobby has really taken over how I spend my creative time. I saw the lockdown as a good time to take a hobby which I enjoyed a bit more seriously and try dioramas which have always interested me.So far, I have made just over 20 dioramas since 2020. I just build what springs to mind and I'm usually working on 2 or 3 at one time. All the cars I use in my dioramas are ones my family and friends have owned over the years.

My favourite things to do are experimenting with weathering techniques and building trees, I find these very challenging and I'm always looking for a more realistic approach with each build. Building dioramas that portray old worn rusty elements are by far the most satisfying things for me to build and there are endless techniques it seems to achieve this.My most important works are the ruin and old bridge, the inspiration for these is from the few years I spent in England as a child in the 80's where these scenes are commonplace which I love about the UK. As I enjoy science fiction the Crashed flying saucer and spaceship wreck were easily the most fun builds so far. There will be more sci-fi builds to come!

I find this hobby very therapeutic and the time flies when you're really getting into a build. There is so many mediums you can use building dioramas which makes it an exciting hobby where you are constantly learning and improving.
